چکیده

A micromechanical study is made of the relationship between interparticle friction coefficient and macroscopic continuum friction and dissipation in idealised granular materials, using Discrete Element Method simulations with varying . As expected, macroscopic friction and dilatancy increase with . Surprisingly, dissipation is present even when or when . Hence, dissipation in idealised granular materials is not exclusively the result of interparticle friction. The dependence of the dissipation-rate function on plastic strains is also investigated.

Numerical Simulations of Undrained Granular Media

The objective of the present study was to develop a fluid flow-coupled distinct element model capable of capturing the undrained behaviour of granular soils by considering fundamental physical mechanisms that involve fluid flow and particle interaction. The method considers granular media as assemblies of ellipsoidal particles arranged on a plane and interacting by means of contact forces. Satu...

Friction phenomena and their impact on the shear behaviour of granular material

In the discrete element simulation of granular materials, the modelling of contacts is crucial for the prediction of the macroscopic material behaviour. From the tribological point of view, friction at contacts needs to be modelled carefully, as it depends on several factors, e.g. contact normal load or temperature to name only two. In discrete element method (DEM) simulations the usage of Coul...

Friction in inertial granular flows: competition between dilation and grain-scale dissipation rates

Friction plays an important role in the behavior of flowing granular media. The effective friction coefficient is a description of shear strength in both slow and rapid flows of these materials. In this paper, we study the steady state effective friction coefficient μ in a granular material in two steps. First, we develop a new relationship between the steady state effective friction coefficien...

From particle simulations to macroscopic constitutive relations

The goal is to determine the constitutive behavior of granular packings under various deformations (isotropic and anisotropic) from particle simulations. For this we consider deformations, stress, structure and the contact forces as the basis. In a previous study [6,7] we investigated using DEM, the evolution of the coordination number (and the packing structure) and pressure as functions of th...

Jamming transition in emulsions and granular materials.

We investigate the jamming transition in packings of emulsions and granular materials via molecular dynamics simulations. The emulsion model is composed of frictionless droplets interacting via nonlinear normal forces obtained using experimental data acquired by confocal microscopy of compressed emulsions systems. Granular materials are modeled by Hertz-Mindlin deformable spherical grains with ...
